Over the course of several decades, David Baldwin has evolved into a singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Baldwin was musical from the moment that he took his first breath. Before he left high school, he was already mastering piano, guitar, and trumpet. While he had dabbled at home recording and garage band antics with friends during high school, Baldwin finally co-founded his first band Automobile in the late 1990s. The band would go on to self-release a full length CD, and tour regularly around the midwest before fizzling out in the early aughts.
While still in Automobile, Baldwin formed a musical partnership with Lansing based singer/songwriter, Matthew Carlson. That collaboration would result in a trove of musical treasures. Between 2000 and 2009, Carlson and Baldwin released four critically lauded records together as The Pantones. The duo then reconnected in 2019 to co-found Harborcoat, a new band based around Carlson’s original songs and Baldwin’s brilliant sonic arrangements.
For more than a quarter century, David Baldwin has honed his musical skills in support of someone else’s songs, bringing them into vivid technicolor with his lyrical guitar playing, lilting background vocals, and effortless musicianship. In addition to his work with Automobile, The Pantones, and Harborcoat, David has also recorded and toured with The Wild Honey Collective, Flatfoot, The Aimcriers, and Deer & Elk.
Now, for the first time, Baldwin is prepared to unveil an album of his own songs under the band name Teutonosaur. A Sweetened Fire, Teutonosaur’s impressive debut LP will be released on September 25, 2026 via Phonophore Records. The ten songs on the album have been germinating and evolving for more than a decade. The album happened in fits and starts, initially all within Baldwin’s home studio. Over several years, he built the songs from spare demos to fully fleshed out productions, playing nearly all of the parts by himself.
Filled with ebullient guitars, shimmering keyboards, and lush arrangements, A Sweetened Fire plays like a lost, almost undefinable classic. There are subtle nods to new wave, Brit-pop, 60’s jangle, and even synth-pop, but the Teutonosaur sound defies pigeonholing. Astute listeners are likely to hear sonic similarities to The Kinks, New Order, The Smiths, Blur, and Yo La Tengo, yet A Sweetened Fire plays as a stunningly original work.
The album bubbled and simmered while Baldwin attended to a full time teaching job, a pair of daughters, and a marriage in crisis. As The Smiths once said, “these things take time”, and as work on the record progressed, Baldwin began to see his work and himself in a whole new light. Sadly, David’s marriage did end in divorce, and that pain echoes throughout the record. However, in dedicating himself to his own songs, David was able to find his own voice and in turn, he has begun to chart a new path for himself.
Teutonosaur’s debut album, A Sweetened Fire will be released on September 25 on Vinyl, Compact Disc, and Digital via Phonophore Records. The band will be playing a pair of Michigan shows to celebrate the release of the album.
